Short Birding Morning Then Travel Day, July 22



Last day in the Atlantic Forest. After breakfast we went back to a unique feeding area. The lodge has a white cloth stretched out with lights shining on it at night to attract moths. Then during the day the birds come to feed there. 










Saw two new types of hummingbirds!





Trilha dos Toucanos lodge is a family owned business. We loved them (and Rex, their Golden)


Then we had a three hour drive back to Sao Paulo which a stop on the way for a very decadent chocolate cappuccino and a delicious sandwich that the lodge had made for us,



After an eventful (story later) 2 hour plane ride to Cuiaba we had an amazing dinner at a churrasco with the Brazilian national drink, caipirinha, made table side. 




Tomorrow we head for the Brazilian Pantanal.  Bring on the Giant River Otters, Caimans, Jaguars, Giant Anteaters, and morešŸ„°.

I am taking a trip to Brazil for the last  two weeks of July 2023. Traveling with two friends and a guide.  We have plans to see jaguars, giant anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, spider monkeys, giant river otters, maned wolves, Capuchin monkeys, and a myriad of colorful birds. We will be visiting three of the six Brazilian biomes.  We will spend two days in the Atlantic Forest,  four days in the Pantanal ,  and three days in the Cerrado . d The Atlantic Forest   is composed of a series of ecosystems with very different structures and composition of flowers, as well as the climatic characteristics of the region where it occurs, having as a common element the exposure to the humid winds that blow from the ocean. * First stop is  Trilha dos Tucanos  where I look forward to feeding brightly colored birds with one hand and drinking a cup of delicious Brazilian coffee with the other. Bearded Capuchin Monkeys/ July 29, morning

           Feeding a Bearded Capuchin monkey The famous nut-cracking Bearded Capuchin Monkeys of Wolf Valley Camp are in fact a 25-minute drive away, in a rocky dry forest nook. We leave Wolf Valley Camp after breakfast to drive to the spot and then walk 20 meters or so to find the monkeys. The monkeys are perfectly prepared to display their nut-cracking skills only a few metres from our little stools. It is amazing to watch these most intelligent of all monkeys choose their special hammer rocks like tools in their tool kit and to do full-body lifts of the heavy rocks and to bring them with all their strength to crack the extremely hard, golf-ball-sized palm nuts. It is especially fascinating to watch young monkeys observing older group members cracking nuts with these hammer rocks. The young monkeys take many months of practice and observation over 3-4 years and then more practice to get strong enough and skilled enough to crack nuts successfully themselve...
