Into the Pantanal, July 23, Morning

We left our São Paulo hotel at 7:30 and began a 4 hour drive into the Brazilian Pantanal towards Pousado Rio Claro. The roads became very dusty and bumpy rather quickly BUT we managed to see an amazing variety of wildlife all before noon!

We arrived at Pousado Rio Claro, our home for the next two nights, just in time for lunch.

Lunch included a drink that I remember enjoying when I lived in Brazil over 50 years ago.

Guaraná is a flowering plant that produces berries similar to the coffee plant. It is native to the Amazon rainforest and has been used for centuries by Brazilian Indians as a source of energy. The seeds of the ripe guarana fruit are used to make a sweet syrup. This syrup is the primary ingredient in guaraná soda, a national favorite in Brazil.
